Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of Shirley S. Jackson, who passed away peacefully on December 21, 2022. As a member and noteworthy figure of the Dorchester County Historical Society, she created a lasting impact on our work and played a significant role in our day-to-day operations.
Miss Shirley Jackson was an active member of the community who was known for her kindness, faith, service, spirit, and passion for history. She received recognition for her efforts and character through awards and similar acknowledgements, including the 2018 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Service Award, the Maryland Senior Citizens Hall of Fame Award, and Governor William Donald Schaefer Dorchester County's Most Beautiful People Award among others.
She will also be missed by several organizations she took part in here on the Eastern Shore, such as Waugh Chapel United Methodist Church, the Nanticoke Historic Preservation Alliance Organization (Handsell), the Harriet Tubman Museum and Educational Center, Coastal Hospice, the Veterans Recognition Committee, the League of Women Voters, Hot Meals Ministry, and Project Head Start.
